Woodland Daily Democrat, IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER Este informe contiene informacion muy importante sobre su agua potable. Traduzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien. City of Woodland Has Levels of Hexavalent Chromium Above the State of California's New Drinking Water Standard Our water system recently violated a State drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what you should do, what happened, and what we are doing to correct this situation. The City of Woodland routinely monitors for the presence of drinking water contaminants. On July 1, 2014, a new California MCL of 0.010 mg/L (10 parts per billion (ppb)) for hexavalent chromium became effective. In accordance with state regulations, the City started quarterly monitoring of all wells for hexavalent chromium in January 2015. Water sample results received on February 19, 2015 showed hexavalent chromium levels of 0.010 - 0.028 mg/L (10-28 ppb). This exceeds the State's standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL), of 0.010 mg/L (10 ppb). The hexavalent chromium level in our groundwater supply currently meets the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) MCL for total chromium, which includes hexavalent chromium at 0.1 mg/L (100 ppb). What should I do? -You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water). -This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing hexavalent chromium in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer. -If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor. What happened? What is being done? Planned Corrective Action: The hexavalent chromium is naturally occurring in the groundwater. The City has been working on a project that will bring our water supply in compliance with the new hexavalent chromium MCL. The Davis-Woodland Water Supply Project, currently under construction, will begin delivering treated Sacramento River water in summer 2016. The hexavalent chromium levels present in Sacramento River water are far below the new MCL. The City has also recently constructed a 3 million gallon water storage tank and an aquifer storage and recovery well. The City is also constructing water transmission mains to distribute the treated surface water equally throughout the City. Two additional aquifer storage and recovery wells are in design and are planned for construction to be completed in early 2017. These efforts along with completion of the regional water treatment plant will bring the City's water supply in compliance with the new MCL. We anticipate resolving the problem by no later than: 1/1/2019.
